Overview

Shizuoka is where golf and Mt. Fuji come together more convincingly than anywhere else in Japan. On a clear morning in Gotemba, Fuji feels less like a backdrop than a constant playing partner, while on the Izu Peninsula the game shifts to fairways above the Pacific. That contrast is what makes Shizuoka special: one prefecture gives you volcanic foothill golf and sea-facing resort golf on one of Japan's most famous coastlines. Kawana Hotel Golf Course's Fuji Course, laid out on cliffs above Sagami Bay, is one of the country's great old seaside courses and is known for hosting the Fujisankei Ladies Classic. Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course, at the foot of Mt. Fuji, is the flagship venue of the Taiheiyo Club group and the home of the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters.

Getting There

For foreign golfers, Shizuoka is unusually easy to reach. From Tokyo, the Tokaido Shinkansen gets you to Mishima in well under an hour and to Shizuoka Station in about an hour, which makes the prefecture realistic even for a one-night trip. From Osaka, Shin-Osaka to Shizuoka is roughly two hours by shinkansen, and golfers heading to the Fuji foothills often continue by rental car toward Gotemba or Susono. Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport is useful for domestic arrivals, while many visitors from Tokyo simply drive down the Tomei Expressway. Takkyubin is especially useful here because so many Shizuoka golf trips combine rail travel with a stay in Gotemba, Izu, Atami, or Shuzenji.

Best Time to Play

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are best for comfortable temperatures, clear views, and stable course conditions while avoiding peak summer heat and typhoon season.

You can soak in an onsen in Atami or Shuzenji, eat sakura shrimp and other Suruga Bay seafood, stop for wasabi around the Izu interior, or head west for Hamamatsu's famous eel. Few prefectures let you move so easily from tournament-caliber golf to hot springs, ocean views, and one of Japan's most iconic mountains.
