Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Grip the driver with a split grip: place your lead hand at the top of the grip and your trail hand several inches lower down the shaft (with space between the hands).

2

Take slow practice swings with this split grip. The separation exaggerates the feel of the club's position, making it easier to notice if the club is on-plane.

3

Hit a few balls (or make practice swings) with the split grip, focusing on keeping your right elbow (for right-handers) in the correct slot on the downswing.

4

After a few split-grip swings, return to a normal grip and swing. The goal is to transfer the improved feel of arm positioning and club path to your regular swing.

Professional Endorsement

Rory McIlroy has been seen using a split-grip drill to hone his backswing and downswing positions; it's a drill he's mentioned when working on keeping his arms in front of his body.
