Punch Shot Drill

Helps control trajectory and promotes solid, ball-first contact. The punch shot (or knockdown shot) is a low-flying iron shot that teaches players to deloft the club slightly and compress the ball – a valuable skill for windy conditions and better contact.

Equipment Needed

Mid-iron (6 or 7 iron)
Golf balls

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Select a mid-iron (e.g., 6 or 7 iron). Set up with the ball a bit back in your stance (approximately one ball-width back from normal) and put slightly more weight on your front foot.

2

Use a shorter backswing than normal (about three-quarter length) and focus on a firm wrist through impact – think of keeping your hands ahead of the clubhead at contact.

3

Swing through with a shortened follow-through: after impact, limit your finish so your hands end low (waist-high). You should feel like you're almost 'punching' the ball out low, rather than a full high finish.

4

Hit a series of shots this way. The ball should come out lower than a normal shot. This drill improves your ability to compress the ball and control distance. Once comfortable, you can integrate the feeling of solid contact into your full swings.

Professional Endorsement

Tiger Woods famously practices low punch shots (stingers) during practice sessions to sharpen his ball striking. Pros like Gary Woodland and knock-down experts use similar drills to control trajectory and strike.
