Pause at the Top Drill

Develops proper sequencing and eliminates a rushed transition. By pausing at the top of the backswing, players learn to start the downswing smoothly, improving timing and consistency with the driver.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Take your normal driver setup and begin a backswing with a smooth tempo.

2

When you reach the top of your backswing (full coil), intentionally pause for a brief moment (about 1–2 seconds).

3

After the pause, initiate the downswing smoothly, focusing on a controlled acceleration through the ball.

4

Hit drives with this pause routine. The slight delay helps you feel the correct order of motion (hips, then shoulders, arms) and prevents quick, jerky transitions.

Professional Endorsement

Hideki Matsuyama is known for a noticeable pause in his swing; practicing with a pause is a technique some coaches use to help amateurs smooth their transition.
