Equipment Needed
Step-by-Step Instructions
Apply a light coat of foot powder spray or impact indicator spray to the face of your iron (or use pre-cut impact tape on the clubface).
Hit an iron shot as normal. Afterwards, inspect the clubface: the point of impact will be clearly marked in the powder or on the tape.
Evaluate the mark: center, towards toe, towards heel, high or low on the face. For example, a toe mark might mean you're standing too far or swinging too inside-out, while a heel mark might indicate the opposite.
Make adjustments to your setup or swing (e.g., posture, ball position, swing path) and hit another shot. Use the feedback from each swing to gradually zero in on consistent center-of-face contact.
This is a practice routine rather than a single swing drill – repeat multiple shots, each time seeking to get the impact mark closer to the sweet spot. Over time, you'll train yourself to deliver the club with precision.
Professional Endorsement
Professional club fitters and players alike use impact tape/spray regularly. Pros like Bryson DeChambeau have been known to check impact positions meticulously during practice to ensure they're finding the sweet spot consistently.
