Hit the Line (Divot Drill)

Teaches proper ball-first contact by ensuring the low point of the swing is in front of the ball. This drill helps eliminate 'fat' shots (hitting the ground behind the ball) which is crucial for solid iron play.

Equipment Needed

Iron (any)
Golf balls
Chalk or tape (if using a mat)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Draw a straight line on a patch of turf or on a hitting mat (you can use spray chalk, a liner, or even arrange a piece of tape on a mat). If on turf, you can also just visualize a line or use a club to mark it lightly.

2

Set up with the line just behind your ball (the line should be directly under the ball or slightly ahead of it towards the target).

3

Make swings trying to strike the ball and then the ground. The divot or brush mark should start at or just after the line (target side of the line).

4

If you see your divot starting behind the line (on the ball side), you hit the ground too early (fat shot). Adjust by keeping weight forward and hands leading at impact. Practice until your divots consistently begin at or just after the line, indicating ball-first contact.

Professional Endorsement

Tour professionals routinely ensure their divots start after the ball. Legendary instructor Harvey Penick often stressed drills to hit the turf in the correct spot; modern pros use alignment stripes on turf for similar feedback.
