Step-by-Step Instructions

1

On the range, tee up a ball. Start with your feet together about a step behind where you'd normally stand.

2

Begin by taking a step forward into your normal stance as you start the backswing (for right-handers, step forward with your left foot, then right foot). It's a small running start into the swing.

3

As your front foot plants, swing through aggressively, letting your momentum carry forward (you might even step through after impact).

4

Focus on a smooth transition from the step into the swing. The drill should feel like a continuous athletic motion. Practice to gain a sense of timing between your footwork and swing for maximum clubhead speed.

Professional Endorsement

Padraig Harrington, a three-time major champion, has demonstrated the 'Happy Gilmore' drill in training to increase clubhead speed and improve lower-body movement. It's also used in long-drive training for power.
