About This Course

Shakespeare Country Club is a hilly 18-hole golf course spread over three plateaus divided by two streams. The terrain features large undulations and unique cross bunkers, making tee shot strategies quite focused. Each hole is named after a Shakespearean theme, with notable ones like “Romeo and Juliet” at holes 1 and 10. The greens are generally large with tricky contours, requiring careful play. Located in Ishikari, Hokkaido, the course is accessible within 25 minutes from major highways and about an hour from central Sapporo. Soft spikes are recommended for play at this thoughtfully designed course by Takeaki Kaneda.

Playing Tips

1
On tee shots prioritize placement over distance to avoid the course’s distinctive cross bunkers that can block aggressive lines.
2
Account for elevation changes between the three plateaus and the two streams—club up or down as needed and favor conservative targets on downhill approaches.
3
The greens are large with pronounced undulations so leave approach shots below the hole and take extra care reading subtle breaks.
4
Expect coastal or open-area wind that can significantly affect carry and direction, so check wind on the tee and adjust club selection accordingly.
5
Use soft spikes for secure footing on slopes and around greens given the hilly terrain and firm turf in places.
